VIDAL PUT GUARDIOLA’S MEN IN DRIVING SEAT (BAYERN 1 – 0 BENFICA)

Arturo Vidal scored very early in the first half of the champions league encounter with Benfica to put the Bundesliga champion in charge ahead of the Wednesday return match in Portugal.
Arturo Vidal gave a 1 – 0 advantage against Benfica to the Bundesliga champion (Bayern Munich) ahead of the second leg clash in Portugal next Wednesday. The advantage was a result of a slim win at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night. Just in second minutes of the encounter, Arturo Vidal nodded home the great cross from Juan Bernat to put the home side in control. Jonas came close to equalize two times to give Benfica a priceless away goal, but all was to no avail. Benfica also had a penalty shout turned down by the referee after a cross hit Philip Lahm (the Bayern captain) on the arm right in the box.
Since 1989/1990 season, Benfica (Primeira Liga leader) not reached the semi-final stage of the champions league which leaves them with a mountain to climb when Bayern knock their door next week for the second leg. Should Bayern go through, it will be their fifth straight last four in recent years. The win against Benfica represents Bayern’s 11th successive home wins in champions league to extend the club record while the Primeira Liga leader (Benfica) have failed to beat Bayern in 7 attempts.
Even though it took Bayern just under two minutes to score, Gualdiola had earlier praised Benfica defense before the match. A terrific cross from Bernat found the head of new signing, Arturo Vidal in the box and he did not waste time sending it to the back of the net for an opening goal.
Douglas Costa warmed the palm of Elderson Moraes (Benfica keeper) after ten minutes in an encounter dominated by Bayern Munich. Thomas Muller also forced another great save from Moraes with a volley. Benfica had a penalty shout rejected when Philip Lahm blocked a cross with his hand. A Tiago Alcantara almost found Muller before before Arturo Vidal nodded into the ground and went over the crossbar.
Jonas warmed the palm of Manuel Neuer after 55 minutes from a Benfica first shot on target, but the Bayern’s keeper dealt with it well. Frank Ribery saw Moraes denied him an 80 minutes strike that could have taken the game beyond Benfica. It was hard for Benfica to break down a Bayern defense, which leaves them with a hard task in Portugal next week.
